Learn to skate

So, you want to be a badass roller derby player? You’ve come to the right place!

Our beginner roller derby sessions take place twice a week at Cardiff Central Youth Club – Thursdays 6:00-7.30pm and Sunday 12-1pm. Each session costs £3 and brand new skaters are always welcome!

Sessions run on a ‘drop-in’ basis so you’re not committed to a strict course or programme. You don’t have to attend every session – if life commitments mean you can only make every other week or only once a month, then so be it – but when you do come, you have to attend for the whole session.

The good news is that you’ll have to chance to learn all the necessary skills needed to play roller derby in these sessions; our learn to skate programme acts as a feeder course to our main league. The more you attend, the quicker you’ll progress!

Before you start

We don’t have any kit to loan so you’ll need your own equipment before joining us. That includes:

  • Quad roller skates (not inlines)
  • A well-fitting helmet
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Knee pads
  • Mouthguard.

Don’t panic if you don’t have any of this stuff yet! We recommend you check out Skate Alley for all your derby needs. Not only is the store owned and run by skaters but they’re also based in the same building we train in. Score, right?

If you’d rather buy second hand while you’re making a decision about what skates to buy or whether roller derby is for you then join the UK Roller Derby Recyclables page on Facebook.
