So, you want to be a badass roller derby player? You’ve come to the right place!
Our beginner roller derby sessions take place twice a week at Cardiff Central Youth Club – Thursdays 6:00-7.30pm and Sunday 12-1pm.
Our 8 week block course covers everything to need to learn, from putting on your skates and standing up, to spinning and jumping! Thursdays are fully structured and coached by experienced Tiger Bay league skaters. Sundays are an open session with a coach on hand to practice skills learned on Thursday.
The good news is that you’ll have to chance to learn all the necessary skills needed to play roller derby in these sessions; our learn to skate programme acts as a feeder course to our main league.
Our Learn To Skate course is £40 for the 8 week course, or £4 a session for Thursdays and £3 a session for Sundays. We recommend block booking the course to save money!
Before you start
From August onwards we will have a limited amount of kit available for hire. Please check our facebook group for details on securing this.
We recommend buying your own kit which will stay with you beyond the course.
- Quad roller skates (not inlines)
- A well-fitting helmet
- Elbow pads
- Wrist guards
- Knee pads
Don’t panic if you don’t have any of this stuff yet! We recommend you check out Skate Alley for all your derby needs. Not only is the store owned and run by skaters but they’re also based in the same building we train in. Score, right?
If you’d rather buy second hand while you’re making a decision about what skates to buy or whether roller derby is for you then join the UK Roller Derby Recyclables page on Facebook.
Want to know more? Join the Learn to skate with TBB group on Facebook. We look forward to welcoming you to the Tiger Bay Brawlers family!
Small (but important) print
Our learn to skate classes are for over 18s only. If you’re under 18 then check out our junior league.
Tiger Bay Brawlers is a women’s roller derby team. If you identify as male and want to play roller derby then please contact our brother league, South Wales Silures.
